6 GENDERS IN CLASSICAL JUDAISM
The Trump administration is finally bursting the bubble – a bubble full of hot air, falsehoods, and nefarious social agendas.
The administration’s move to define gender biologically is causing hysteria among outspoken transgender activists and celebrities, protesting with the rallying cry of “We will not be erased!” After years of effort to promote transgenderism as a normal and even “in” and “cool” type of identity, deserving of broad protections and demanding respect bordering on that of a royal class, the bubble is being burst with a pierce of reality.
As reported by the New York Times:
[T]he Department of Health and Human Services is spearheading an effort to establish a legal definition of sex under Title IX, the federal civil rights law that bans gender discrimination in education programs that receive government financial assistance.
The department argued in its memo that key government agencies needed to adopt an explicit and uniform definition of gender as determined “on a biological basis that is clear, grounded in science, objective and administrable.” The agency’s proposed definition would define sex as either male or female, unchangeable, and determined by the genitals that a person is born with, according to a draft reviewed by The Times. Any dispute about one’s sex would have to be clarified using genetic testing.
“Sex means a person’s status as male or female based on immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth,” the department proposed in the memo, which was drafted and has been circulating since last spring. “The sex listed on a person’s birth certificate, as originally issued, shall constitute definitive proof of a person’s sex unless rebutted by reliable genetic evidence.”
The entire transgender legitimacy movement is a fabrication in which new vocabulary was introduced to glorify those who suffer from the psychiatric condition known as gender dysphoria. Although it has been sanitized to reflect political correctness and liberal values, the American Psychiatric Association’s classification of gender dysphoria treats the condition as a mental disorder; it is hard to avoid the inescapable scientific truth. Under President Obama, the federal government was directed to deny this truth and to treat those with gender dysphoria as really being of the sex they imagine they are, due to their disorder. President Trump has corrected this error and should be applauded.
Imagine someone suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder (which was previously referred to as Multiple Personality Disorder) being assigned two Social Security numbers, two legal names, and two different birthdays, due to the person’s psychiatric delusion that he is two different people. It would be absurd for one’s legal identity to be controlled by fantasies that are the product of a mental disorder. Is not the transgender issue equally absurd, such that one’s imagined sex, which represents a psychiatric ailment, should dictate to the government whether such a person is legally male or female?
Farcically, New York mayor Bill de Blasio has taken it all one step farther, recently signing a bill that allows residents of New York City to register their birth certificates at will under Gender “X,” meaning that a person is neither male nor female. This follows previous legislation signed by de Blasio that allows New Yorkers to change their birth certificate sex from male to female and vice versa, as well as a massive array of programming under the name “LGBTQ Youth” introduced by de Blasio, plus steep fines for New Yorkers who use the wrong sex pronouns for transgender people.
Transgender advocates get upset when various transgender “types” are randomly treated as one category and not individually distinguished. Let’s take a closer look and see who should really be upset.
Gender dysphoria, a term shunned by transgender advocates, signifies a mental disorder, as described above. The other type of transgenderism – which is really something else and hence is not legitimately part of the congenital transgender classification – is referred to as “gender nonconformity,” about which the American Psychiatric Association states:
Gender dysphoria is not the same as gender nonconformity, which refers to behaviors not matching the gender norms or stereotypes of the gender assigned at birth. Examples of gender nonconformity (also referred to as gender expansiveness or gender creativity) include girls behaving and dressing in ways more socially expected of boys or occasional cross-dressing in adult men. Gender nonconformity is not a mental disorder.
In other words, males and females voluntarily acting like the opposite sex are manifestations of gender nonconformity. Transgender activists adamantly demand that “gender nonconforming” men who opt to act like women, and women who opt to act like men, be accorded special status and protections and be allowed to legally identify under this abnormal classification. Transgender advocacy for this sorry hoax reaches the heights of audacity and, as we would say in Hebrew and Yiddish, is downright chutzpah.
For those of us who believe in the Bible, none of this is necessary, for we read in the Book of Genesis (1:27), “male and female did He [God] create them.” This is an immutable and existential truth that renders the entire transgender discussion moot. But since our government is run for the most part according to secular values (despite various affirmations of faith in God in America’s foundational documents), we must work within the system – a system that for way too long as been indoctrinated with belief in an agenda-driven myth. Thank God, President Trump has instead chosen the undeniable truth.

6 GENDERS IN CLASSICAL JUDAISM
More Than Just Male and Female: The Six Genders in Classical Judaism
June 01, 2015
It’s very easy to assume that Judaism is an exclusively gender-binary religion. Almost all of the common traditional laws are based on the assumed differences between males and females. We see it in assumed gender roles, in liturgy, in proscribed family responsibilities, and in both our secular and religious laws.
If, however, we look just a bit deeper into our sacred texts, we see that a simple male/female binary is not only cumbersome, it’s wholly inaccurate. This description from Trans Torah/Rabbi Elliot Kukla starts the conversation that we will continue throughout the summer:
• Zachar/זָכָר: This term is derived from the word for a pointy sword and refers to a phallus. It is usually translated as “male” in English.
• Nekeivah/נְקֵבָה: This term is derived from the word for a crevice and probably refers to a vaginal opening. It is usually translated as “female” in English.
• Androgynos/אַנְדְּרוֹגִינוֹס: A person who has both “male” and “female” sexual characteristics. 149 references in Mishna and Talmud (1st-8th Centuries CE); 350 in classical midrash and Jewish law codes (2nd -16th Centuries CE).
• Tumtum/ טֻומְטוּם A person whose sexual characteristics are indeterminate or obscured. 181 references in Mishna and Talmud; 335 in classical midrash and Jewish law codes.
• Ay’lonit/איילונית: A person who is identified as “female” at birth but develops “male” characteristics at puberty and is infertile. 80 references in Mishna and Talmud; 40 in classical midrash and Jewish law codes.
• Saris/סריס: A person who is identified as “male” at birth but develops “female” characteristics as puberty and/or is lacking a penis. A saris can be “naturally” a saris (saris hamah), or become one through human intervention (saris adam). 156 references in mishna and Talmud; 379 in classical midrash and Jewish law codes.
There’s a huge amount of information to unpack here, and we’ll be continuing all summer long to do just that, including looking at the legal obligations of each of the genders and what the real-world application of this information is. For now, though, the main point to take from all of this: The male/female binary is not, in any way, the exclusive system of gender classification in traditional Judaism*.
So how did we get to this point, where the assumption has become that only male and female exist? It’s a classic example of commonality being equated to superiority. Because male and female are the two most common categories, they were assumed to be “better,” rather than “typical.” As we have come to understand the complexities of gender more and more in secular society, these Judaic classifications are beginning to appear more and more often and we can clearly see that our ancestors were quite progressive when it comes to gender.
Because, as Ben Bagbag says in Pirkei Avot 5:22:
בן בגבג אומר, הפוך בה והפך בה, והגי בה דכולא בה, ובה תחזי, סיב ובלי בה; ומינה לא תזוז, שאין לך מידה טובה יותר ממנה
Ben Bagbag said: Turn it [Torah] over and turn it over because everything is in it. Look within it and grow old within it; do not move from it, because there is no better attribute for you to have than it.

Dear Pip,
When I studied psychiatry & psychology for nurses, 1 of the 1st lessons was to never support a delusion; always counter it with truth. I also studied anatomy& physiology, including sexual development. The ancient Jews, unfortunately mistook developmental anomalies for somehow “different” sexes, because they had no access to DNA, as we do today. There are anomalies, but the bottom line is that our DNA, from conception, determines what sex we are, & causes the appropriate genitalia to develop. Even hermaphrodites, who seem to have both sets of genitals, have only 1 functional set, corresponding to their XX or XY DNA. Other health issues can make it appear 1 is something “in between” or different than your external genitals, but the DNA is the “bottom line” in that business, certainly not learned behavioral disorders, or other health issues, such as adrenal or thyroid malfunctions.
Gender is a linguistic tool which assigns sexual traits to inanimate objects, but it’s still the binary of masculine or feminine; we humans simply do not have genders. Supporting a delusion helps no one, least of all the 1 suffering that delusion. Until someone presents sound science to countermand what I learned before the mass psychosis took hold of our society, & what the Bible tells me, that is in accord with the science I learned, I will continue to think & operate in that truth with respect to sex & gender. You, naturally are free to believe as you wish; that’s what free will is about. No one, however, is free to require me to believe & celebrate lies.
That said, I can, & do, separate the behaviors from the person, & love the person, although some make that a very difficult task…
What is being done to children these days, amounts to child sexual abuse, THE WORST possible crime 1 human can commit against another. A murdered child doesn’t have to try to live the rest of his life with the damage done by a sexual abuser…
Every child who survives sexual abuse has received a”life sentence”. I have never met a fellow survivor who doesn’t carry scars, even after therapy, & I’ve also never met 1 our Lord chose to miraculously heal, so I honestly can’t say whether they also still have scars, but as a nurse, I know where injury has occurred, scars form as part of healing, whether the injury is physical or psychological. I also know, both professionally & experientially, the psychological damage is the most difficult to heal. These children are being damaged for life, even if they don’t succumb to the pressures to believe they are other than what our God made them to be. I can’t imagine a more diabolic evil to perpetrate on an innocent child!
