  1. He was a shy man who liked cats and enjoyed playing the piano.
    He was a natural born teacher; he loved Theology and was happy in Academia, sharing his love of God with his students and writing about it with such wisdom and clarity that during his lifetime he was often spoken of as a future Doctor of the Church.
    He liked Rome, but preferred the academic life. Nevertheless he served his predecessor JP II faithfully and well, and helped the Pope revise the Code of Canon law.

    He didn’t want to be Pope; he longed to retire with his brother– also a priest–to his native land with his cats and his books and piano, and continue to write until God called him home.
    Instead, God tapped this shy, humble, brilliant man to become Pope in an unspeakably evil era.
    He wasn’t perfect, but he did his best until he couldn’t any more. Ten years later, he ended his life of prayer in an impeded see.
    “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.”
