There are Still at least 8 Catholic Bishops Consecrated in the Old Rite — Pre 1968

Please Note: these are the Bishops who if they are still alive, were consecrated in the old Roman rite.

The new rite for consecrating bishops was published according to L’Osservtore Romano by Pope Paul VI in on June 18, 1968.

However, as this data on bishops comes from Catholic-Hierarchy.org it may list some bishops as alive, who are not alive.

Also, other bishops, consecrated after June 18, 1968, may have been consecrated in the Old Rite for a variety of reasons, such as not having the liturgical books for the New Rite present for their consecrations. Listed here are all the members of the Sacred Hierarchy, that is, all who received consecration with Papal mandate.

There also may be many bishops consecrated in the old rituals of the other Rites of the Church, about which, if you have information, comment below.

Archbishop Gilberto Pereira Lopes, Archbishop Emeritus of Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil — Consecrated on Dec. 18, 1966.

Bishop Julian Andrzej Wojtkowski, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of Warmia, Poland — Consecrated on Aug. 22, 1969.

    1. This has nothing to do with the fact that the Bishop thus consecrated is more traditional or not. All the Bishops at Vatican II who were thrilled with the liturgical renewal had been consecrated in the old rite. The Old Rite is twofold, in the Roman Rite: that which existed before Pius XII altered the formulae for consecration, and that which existed before the new rite was introduced in 1968 by Paul VI on June 18th of that year. — This old ritual had more prayers and more expressive supplications for the one to be consecrated.       I have listed these bishops, because as an anthropologist, for me the passing of the torch from one generation to another, is a key moment in every civilization. And the fact that there are still at least 8 bishops consecrated in the Old Rite, means the Church is still in communion with her past in a very concrete way. It is also a sign of hope, that the present destructive and iconoclastic movement begun by revolutionaries at Vatican II, may yet fail. I at least hope it does.

      I am a dreamer, and I hope that the next man elected pope is not a bishop, and chooses 3 of these men to consecrate him Bishop, to give the Catholic World the strongest possible message about where the Church should be headed.

      Mel gave a talk on point here. And for a sedevacantist, he is pretty mild, so what he says could be agreed with by nearly every Catholic who cares about the Church…

    Are the SSPX bishops conspicuously absent here because they are considered either “sedevacantists or schismatics”??? Not sure that either of these labels would be accurate…

  5. Some additional thoughts:
    1. I, too, thought of Bishop Gracida, but while he was ordained a priest in the Old Rite, he was consecrated a bishop in the New Rite, 1972.
    2. Assuming that one of the points of this article is to show the now frightful condition of our hierarchy 60 years after Vatican II, it is helpful to also realize that there are at least a few other Old Rite consecrated bishops scattered throughout the world (even without papal mandates.)
    3. This article was very helpful in highlighting that there is a frightening global crisis in the single fact that the number of bishops ordained in the Old Rite is catastrophically small. And Bergoglio is HELL BENT on making sure that the authentic Mass and Sacraments are wiped off the face of the earth — forever. I have seen that the New Rite of episcopal ordination is highly suspect, making this article a very important presentation.

    4. Our Lady will eventually triumph, of course, but we know that Hell will be allowed a temporary seeming “victory” where the true Church will be underground even more than it is now. This temporary “victory” for the infernal powers is right on the horizon, and with Pope Benedict gone, Bergoglio is clearly escalating his perfidy. I suspect that the chastisements that are looming will overlap with every further step that Bergoglio takes downward into the abyss, as he continues to make war against everything authentically Catholic.

      AT THE TIME OF MY ORDINATION IN THE CATHEDRAL OF MIAMI I WAS BOTH THE RECTOR OF THE CATHEDRAL AND THE CHAIRMAN OF THE LITURGICAL COMMISSION OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF MIAMI.

      WHEN IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT I HAD BEEEN APPOINTED AUXILARY BISHOP OF MIAMI, KNOWING ARCHBISHOP CARROLL WAS HOSTILE TO ANIBALE BUGNINI I ASKED THE ARCHBISHOP IF HE WANTED ME TO ORDER A COPY OF TE BUGNINI PONTIFICALE, WHICH HAD JUST BEEN PUBLISHED, FOR USE IN MY ORDINATION AND HE RESPONDED “ABSOLUTELY NO!”

      CONSEQUENTLY WE USED THE OLD PRE-VATICAN II

      PONTIFICALE IN THE CATHDRAL FOR MY ORDINATION.

      1. What we often forget is that most of the clergy WERE AGAINST THE LITURGICAL REFORM. But they were bumped off or eliminated, metaphorically speaking, over the years.

  7. Very happy to see that Bishop Gracida was ordained in the Old Rite!! Perhaps there are a few more — if they are even still alive. (And perhaps he can privately ordain a bishop or two, as happened privately in the past with old bishops who wanted to preserve the Catholic Church.)
    It is definitely not so easy for the general public — or even those seeking the truth — to really grasp the full state of things as they exist in today’s shambles. The good news in this particular case is also that any priests ordained by Bishop Gracida stand the chance of being valid ordinations. At some point, this sort of additional inquiry about our priests will become hugely important, while we still wallow in a huge “cloud of unknowing” regarding which ones are true bishops or true priests…

    1. I do not think he has ever ordained a priest in the old rite. But whether consecrated in the new or the old rite, a bishop is still valid, since he receives the same munus. personally he may not enjoy the same graces, because of the variations in the ritual, but he can confer them all with the better ritual.

  8. I hope you are right. I have seen, however, numerous credible sources over the last few years that have highlighted that among all the deformations to Sacraments, Liturgy, etc., etc., made by Paul VI, it is the episcopal consecrations that were particularly mutilated and therefore under strong suspicion of invalidity in the new rite. Evidently, there were some especially significant and noteworthy deletions/revisions in the new rite of episcopal consecration. I’m no expert on this, but I’m not so sure we can assume that the bishops consecrated in the new rite are actually valid bishops. This, at least, is a valid and catastrophic concern….
