I wonder if the Catholics of Mongolia are descendants of the steppe Mongolian tribe mentioned during the reign of Genghis Khan 1162-1227 A.D. that were Nestorian Christians. In which, Genghis Khan’s mother Hoelun Ujin was from.
Many in the West do not know. That the Francsican Friar Giovanni da Pian del Carpini travelled , as a Diplomat of Pope Innocent IV to the Court of Ögedei, Khan of the Mongols between 1247-1252 A.D.
When the Muslim Governor Inalchuq of Otrar (near the border of Modern Day China & Khazakhistan) killed the emissary of Genghis Khan in 1218 A.D. unleashed the wrath of the Mongol nation upon the Muslims. In 1260 A.D., the Mongols, while the Caliphate of Baghdad claimed that “Allah” would destory the Mongols invaders was killed on the walls of the city. Ending forever the Sunni Muslim Caliphate.
The Mongol who destroyed the Caliphate was a Nestorian Christian.
Why is he so celebrated by so many countries ?
It is de rigor, that when a head of state visits, there is some pomp and circumstance. Inviting Pope Francis to Mongolia, is Mongolia’s way of saying to Russia and China, its only neighbors, that “We are an independent sovereign nation, which has our own right to set our own course, and does not have to follow either of you.”
