This Cardinal, named by Pope Francis, was the man who side-by-side with Pope Francis crafted a linguistic game to keep the African Bishops from open revolt over the pro-sodomy blessings document, “Fiducia supplicans” (Trust while bending over), a truly obscene title. He has also spoken in favor of women deacons. — I would say that it is a fat chance in Hell that the College is going to elect a pro-Bergoglian or otherwise his closest friends would not be so upset that he is dying and that others realize it. — However, for this small news outlet in Sicily to float the idea of this obscure Cardinal is probably only a publicity test, where they will collect statistics on people’s response and see if the Left in Italy will accept such a candidate from Africa. — And this in turn means that the candidacy of the Left wing Cardinals from Italy is already suspect, which is good news.

As a cultural anthropologist, I think that the present cultural identity crisis in the West pretty much would guarantee a schism in the Church if the Cardinals elect such a man from Africa. Maybe few Bishops would participate, but nearly all the conservatives and youth would. There is a tremendous anger and frustration among many Catholics in the West about being forced to accept foreigners and non-Europeans to rule over them. And such an election would be the last straw for 10s of millions of Catholics in Europe and North America. So if the College of Cardinals wants to destroy the Church more and depend on its financing solely from Africa, they probably could not chose a better option.
