In the years of the First Crusade 1096-1099, their was the legimate Pope Urban II de Clermont and the Anti-Pope Clement III (alias Guibert di Ravenna)(whom was elected under the influence of the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire). It was so bad, that in 1096 when Robert II de Normandie arrived with the Normandy Crusaders in Rome to visit Pope Urban II. The gates to Vatican City were closed and the Crusaders were unwelcome.
The city’s towers one was manned by Guibert’s sycophants and the others adherants to Pope Urban II.
