The Italians have been involved in Aviation since the early 20th century. Like all other Western Militaries, it was extension of the Balloon/Airship crazy of the early 20th century. The Italian aviation industry was formed by a multitude of companies prior to WWI to serve the fascination of the ever growing interest of the wealthy to flight to their destination in a shorter period of time. The Italian Military aircraft an extension of the civilian aircraft production came into exist during WWI. By WWII, The Italians produced war aircraft that were sold to other countries, Greece, Yugoslavia, etc. bringing in export money.
Perhaps Italy makes better weapons than soldiers. The germans apperantely had a joke about the italians during WW2. They meant that if WW3 were to happen, it would be difficult to know who would win. But the side who would surely lose was the side who had Italy on their team.
I apologise for it being a bit offensive but it is also a bit funny and has some truth to it. Atleast in the modern military age.
