Br. do you know of a sort of list of days throughout the year and which we are not to fast, or even not to abstain (if there anyone those)?
I seem to understand that Sundays we shouldn’t fast, is this correct? What about abstaining on Sundays? Also no? Which other days? Is there a easy list somewhere?
Many monasteries, at least in the United States, sell Catholic calendars which indicate the fast days in the Roman Rite, modern or traditional. Every Catholic should have such a calendar at home, to remind him of such things and indicate the Saint’s feast days for his own country and days of fast and abstinence. I am sure in your country there are many who publish such things. Look for them.
Oh, yes, I do have a liturgical calendar, I may have been unclear. The calendar indicated all the penitential and fast day, Saints days and solemnities, ember days etc.
So it’s clear as to when we must fast and abstain, I am wondering about which days we may not fast and abstain. Like Easter for example, we aren’t supposed to fast on Easter, but which others days must we *not* fast or abstain?
The rule about not fasting has to do with ancient heresies which denied the bodily resurrection or hated the physical reality of being human. It is no longer a rule in canon law or any ecclesiastical discipline. So for spiritual reasons one can fast on any day.
Fasting’s purpose is to cleanse the flesh of desires for this world. It is not a necessity of spiritual life in those who are self controlled, but it is for those who need to sober up and those who need to humble themselves before the Living God.
Ah, i see, thank you for this clarification. This helps. Thanks a lot!
