Dr. Erik Walters, Cabot University, Rome: Benedict XVI’s renunciation & 2013 Conclave were invalid

Editor’s Note: Better late than never, but since this Professor of Philology has decided to speak out days after Pope Francis’ death and is a professor at a University at Rome, for the record I republish this video. — His position is essentially that of Cionci on how to resolve the matter, which is quite extraordinary, since as a philologist at Rome he should be familiar with Church history, rather than read the writings of an opera singer, expert in Italian literature. — Later on in this video, Dr. Walters admits to have assisted Andre Cionci, saying he is the only scholar in the English speaking world that could understand this thesis — by which I think he refers to Cionci’s.

Dr. Walters follows Cionci in hoping for 3 Cardinals appointed by John Paul II or Benedict XVI to call a Conclave before 2036 or something like that. This is truly loony, since only the Cardinal Dean can convoke a conclave. Thus he rejects out of these principles that the next Conclave will validly elect anyone as pope. As for declaring Pope Benedict XVI dead, only the Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber can do that, and he was Cardinal Bertone in 2013. So if you held Cionci’s thesis, you would have to say that Bertone, who is still alive, is still the Camerlengo, and so he alone has to make the declaration. But Cionci’s thesis is an inconsistent grab-bag, to create some alternative to the January 30, 2023 election. In fact, he invented his explanation after that date.

If you want correct facts and the correct laws to cite, you would do better to read, The Index to Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation, because Dr. Walters gets a good number of things wrong, but then again, he is a philologist who pretends than no one but Cionci has written on these topics. That’s very strange, since philologists normally read too much, not too little. Indeed, if he has read Cionci’s book, he would know that there are many English speakers who have spoken about the Renunciation of Pope Benedict, since that book cites FromRome.info, which has for the record cited them all at some time in the past 12 years.
