Editor’s Note: In Italy, the public authorities have complete control on what happens in public, from posters being carried by pedestrians to funerals. This was on display in Rome today, when the public authority refused permission to have a funeral procession for Guerrino Casamonica, the Mob Boss who recently passed away at the age of 59.
This mafia family, Casamonica, is of Sind origin, a region in the deserts of Pakistan & India. But having been in Italy for 60 years, they picked up the Italian sense for style and art, rather well, I would say. — I do not know, however, how they became Catholic, but the surname can be translated as, “Consilieri’s strong box”, which is comical if not also accurate.
When the previous Mob Boss of the same family passed in 2006, the family put on an extraordinarily ostentatious funeral at the Church of Saint John Bosco: replete with a horse drawn 19th century hearse, and a shower of rose petals from a helicopter, with a band playing the theme music from the movie, “The Godfather”, see below, for how it went down:
