The Future Cardinal Bob, at Highschool Graduation

Editor’s Note: This image is found in the OSV article about his highschool seminary companion’s memories of Bob, here. If you are a man who grew up in the U.S.A., then you will understand everything from this one photo. Class of 1973. — As a side note, crooked noses are the result of children being fed from bottles rather than from the mother’s breasts, because the artificial nipple on a baby’s bottle causes an unbalanced muscular development in the face.

As for the dedication he left in his friend, Tom’s yearbook, remember that this was a Catholic Highschool, and the future Cardinal simply writes, “Best of luck!”

As a Roman Catholic man who grew up in the USA and attended a secular state run High School, I cannot imagine saying, “Best of Luck” to a fellow Catholic man upon graduation. It boggles the mind, especially when Tom went on to become a Benedictine Monk.
