In many formation programs for religious and priests in the Church, I can assure you, from my personal experience, that vocations are pressured to confess to designated “approved” men, not because these men are upright and holy, but because they are chosen by superiors to maintain control.
I remember in the last months I was a member of the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate, that only when I began going to confession to the local pastor, did I discover how much I was being psychologically manipulated by my superiors, spiritual directors and confessors to ignore the gross internal corruption of my own institute. That is why I left them, rather than take perpetual lifetime solemn vows, as I had no intention of joining a criminal organization while swearing on the Gospels to remain with them to the end of my days. — Years later, many of my confrers who also left, told me horror stories about what else was going on in that institute. Strangely, I felt relieved in a certain sense upon hearing them, because I realized how much danger I escaped by my insistence on honesty years before.
