Belgium is an artificial state. Belgium did not even exist prior to 1876. When an area of territory in North – East France, and parts of Holland, were aggregated into what has become “modern” Belgium. The creation of Belgium was precipitated by the Franco – Prussian war, between France and Germany. And, with the cessation of hostilities, it was decided to create what might be termed an “demilitarized zone” between the two countries. To reduce the possibility of future conflict between them. In antiquity, in an area “approximate” to the territory of modern Belgium, there were two, small Roman provinces” Belgica Inferior and Belgica Superior. But, these jurisdictions disappeared at the end of antiquity. And the territory which they occupied was absorbed within the Carolingian or Holy Roman Empire. Of Charlemagne and his descendants.
