Why is “Amazing Grace” heretical?
As a southern girl, I grew up singing that song.
Yes, because it preaches a salvation by grace without the works of faith, hope, charity and penance. — Grace is not an intelligent being, it does not save us. Christ saves us by His merits, within the plan of the Holy Trinity conceived in eternity, a plan which includes and requires our cooperation and obedience, our “Let it be done unto me according to Thy Word”. Also, God gives grace before Faith, because grace is not only that kind which sanctifies or justifies, but also that which prepares. This song imagines a grace which justifies only. It also does not speak of the multitude of unending graces which come after the first hour of believing. So it omits a concept of grace which applies to those Baptised before and after they are humanly capable of believing. And for all these reasons, it presents a concept of Faith which is not biblical in its totality, in addition to its omission to praise and thank God for all kinds of grace.
