by Br. Alexis Bugnolo
You may not know, but before I stared FromRome.Info, I spent my time translating the writings of Saints from Latin to English.
My first translation was the collected writings of Saint Francis of Assisi, from the critical edition of Kajetan Esser OFM.
That translation is now in its second edition, and is back in print. There are only a few hundred copies available, so it is being offered for a donation on a first come basis.
(see photo above).
Since, today is the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, I share this news again, today.
For more information or to order a copy from the publisher, go to the Franciscan Archive. — You will find it as the 3rd publication on that page.
DUE TO SHIPPING COSTS, THIS BOOK IS NOT SOLD TO ADDRESSES OUTSIDE OF THE USA.
CREDITS: The photo above shows stacks of the 2nd Edition.

I obtained a copy of the 2008 version of this book a few years ago and read a chapter every Sunday with my son, then in his late teens. Fond memories!
The translation is very clear and the footnotes extensive, but not overbearing.
I highly recommend it to all English speaking readers of FromRome.info.
One of the first revelations in the Regula Bullata – the Rule and life of the Friars Minor, as approved by Pope Honorius III in his 1223AD Bull, Solet Annuere – which begins about half way through the book, is the care taken by St Francis to promise “obedience and reverence to the Lord Pope Honorius and to his canonically elected successors and to the Roman Church”.
I have read the Rule of St Benedict and do not recall such care and attention to ensure obedience to canonically elected successors only of the Pope who approved the Rule. I am not familiar with the Rules governing other Catholic orders, but it might be an insightful topic of investigation.
This translation lacks the purported last will and instructions of St Francis, which apparently prophesied the current desolation of the Order of the Friars Minor, and are quoted in various articles and commentaries on the current state of the Church.
These few paragraphs are available in at least one other English translation which can be readily found online, but for me it was a pity that they were not included – with relevant caveats as to their origin – for completeness.
Now you know what part of the Rule of Saint Francis I am trying to observe by being at Rome.
