Editor’s Note: It is often said that Sacred Scripture speaks inexactly and was written by ignorants, and must be interpreted or interpolated to be understood. But the discovery of the Antikythera mechanism, more advanced than any analogue computer built before the 17th Century, shows that the Classical World was a lot more advanced technologically than post modern’s ever imagined. — This has massive implications regarding the importance of understanding even original Christian texts with imprecision rather than interpolation.
Being a quasi Classics Major at the University of Florida, even though I chose to take a B. A. in Cultural Anthropology, it is artifacts such as the Antikythera Mechanism which I find most fascinating, and the most powerful to debunk the prejudice of moderns regarding the expertise of the ancients. And that is why I share it, here, at FromRome.Info, even though it is quite off topic.
The name, “Antikythera” refers to the Island of the same name between Greece and Crete, which is positioned opposite or facing the Island of Kythera.
The Antikythera Mechanism along with the mechanical robotic statues in pagan temples, were part of the technology of the ancient world which was a daily feature of Classical Greece and Rome. Even Cicero spoke of having seen such mechanisms, and Saint John the Evangelist warned of robotic deities in his work, The Apocalypse.
