Breaking News: Pope Francis to abdicate, move into Santa Maria Maggiore Apartment?

Commentary by Br. Alexis Bugnolo

According to the report of InfoVaticana, above, in Spanish:

The rumor that has spread in recent hours finds new confirmation. The apartment where Pope Francis will be hospitalized in Santa Maria Maggiore is ready and equipped to welcome the pontiff upon his release from the Gemelli Hospital, with the necessary equipment to care for an elderly patient, 88 years old, in the extremely delicate clinical condition that everyone now knows is. Why set up the hospital apartment in Santa Maria Maggiore and not in Santa Marta, where the Pope resides? The Roman basilica is the designated location in case of his resignation. Unlike Benedict XVI, Pope Francis has already publicly stated that he does not intend to remain in the Vatican, as Ratzinger did, but to move permanently to Santa Maria Maggiore. Added to this is the fact that he has already identified, within the Roman Basilica, the place where he wants to be buried. He also gave precise instructions on how his funeral should be carried out.

While at the present, this is only a rumor, it is perfectly consistent with all the news reported so far, that Pope Francis’ lungs are permanently damaged and he will have to be on oxygen and breathing machines for the rest of his life (as Dr. Bassetti believes is highly likely). This implies the very precise conditions of debilitated health, for which he has several times in the past said would lead him to decide to abdicate, as the AP reported last month.

FromRome.Info will follow this story closely. If true, we can expect in a few days, when Pope Francis is released from Gemelli that the announcement of his renunciation of the Papacy be made.

For more information, this is what Pope Francis needs to do to renounce the Papacy validly.

UPDATES March 12: The denials in recent weeks that Pope Francis was having a room prepared for him at Santa Marta, on the south gate of Vatican City, seems to confirm that he will transfer from Gemelli to another location. It is certain that he will have to be on oxygen during the day and during the night, so these facts seem to corroborate the report above.

The Consistory of Cardinals, which Pope Francis convoked on Feb. 25, for an unspecified future date, also seems to give credibility to the above report, since the most proper way for a Pope to renounce is in the presence of the College of Cardinals fully assembled. So I expect that the announcement of a precise date for the Consistory, and its location at Santa Maria Maggiore, will be the imminent confirmations of the above report.

UPDATES: March 13: The Vatican News Bulletin on Pope Francis’ health, last evening, denied that it is certain that Pope Francis would go to Nicea, Turkey for the 1700th Anniversary of the Council of Nicea, an event so important a Pope could not not attend. This seems to be further confirmation of his imminent resignation, not to mention that since a new pope will need weeks to prepare for this trip, Pope Francis’ resignation would have to be in March or early April to accommodate for that. — Meanwhile Bookies in the United Kingdom have put 75% odds on Pope Francis resigning in 2025.

One of our sources among the staff of Santa Maria Maggiore says that he also has heard the rumor that Pope Francis will transfer there after leaving Gemelli Hospital, but not from any authoritative source.

Vatican News: Pope’s Doctors say he’s responding, but not out of Danger

Summary by Br. Alexis Bugnolo

Note, that the Italian Original has much more information. Here is an English translation of the Italian. For those who want the 1 minute summary, in my own words:

The Pope’s Doctors insist he is being given the correct treatment, even though they admit his situation is precarious and easily made worse by multiple factors. They have risked giving him Cortisone even though they know it reduces immune response. The Pope is being given a variety of medicines, including antibiotics, but is suffering from a complex infection of the lungs, which can be contained but not cured. He will remain in hospital as long as is needed, so that he can return safely to the Vatican, and as far as they can determine, he requires at least one more week in hospital. All press releases were made with the consent of the Medical Staff and Pope Francis’ decision to keep information sparse but essential. There is a risk of sepsis, which if it were to occur would be difficult if not impossible to stop. So far Pope Francis is not experiencing any bacterial infection of his blood, but they remain concerned.

Commentary

Everything about his medical condition has been confirmed, including the danger of sepsis and the use of cortisone, as I reported yesterday morning. The pope is not going to get well quickly, because of the real danger that he can get worse and because of his persistent life-long lung issues. It does not seem we will get more information but tid-bits going forward, but now that the names of the Doctors caring for Pope Francis have been given, I think the Medical Team is at last confident that he will live. It seems doubtful that he will ever be able to resume his busy schedule as before, since at the Vatican much of those activities are conducted in poorly heated rooms or outside and in the presence of persons who could easily transmit other infections to those with weak immune systems.

His Renunciation is now, nearly certain

The result is, that I believe there will be increased counsel from friends and Cardinals that Pope Francis recognize that he will need to abdicate and care for his health, while limiting himself to the ministry of a Bishop Emeritus of Rome, without a demanding schedule.

We Catholics who have the Faith can see in this the work of the Divine Providence, Which while blessing those who participated in the Sutri Initiative, has responded to the unwillingness of the Bishops to act out of fraternal charity, by checkmating Pope Francis on the biological level. The Pope is now caught between his desire to be active and the center of attention, with the real risk of death and return to a relapse if he does.

At the same time, because of his real health situation being known, there will be increasing pressure from all sides that he renounce.  First from those who really care for him. Second, from the Cardinals who know that the Vatican will spin out of control without the presence of a Pope. Third, from the Secretary of State who will emphasize that the duties of state require that a Pope be available for all eventualities and keep his commitments to pastoral visits and receiving Heads of State. Fourth, from the Mayor of Rome, who will understand immediately that without a Pope present for the Jubilee year the 10s of millions spent for its preparation will go to waste and businessmen will be ruined as pilgrims cancel their trips, having lost hope of seeing the Pope in person. And fifth from all those clergy and laity who realize that Pope Francis has burnt through his moral credibility as a leader and that a change is needed. — None of these persons hate Pope Francis, but all of them are prudent people on the supernatural or natural levels.

Against this is the stubbornness of an old man. When he will concede or if he will die trying not to concede they are right, God alone knows. But as an anthropologist, I think he will be led to renounce this spring, if his health is still precarious by Easter. Maybe as soon as the Feast of Saint Joseph, whose name he wanted added to the Canon and who is Patron Protector of the Church, since such important acts are usually done on important feast days. That way Pope Francis can make a big fan fare of the event, and receive one last standing ovation from a large multitude willing to see him as Pope one last time.

Giovagnoli: Why Pope Francis’ resignation looks more likely even if he recovers

Editor’s Note: Read the above article in English, here. Agostino Giovagnoli is a noted historian of the relations of the Italian Republic and the Apostolic See at the University of the Sacred Heart, which runs Gemelli Hospital, where Pope Francis is being cared for. In this article, he explains at length, that Pope Francis’ health is undeniably delicate and any return to his duties will likely result in a relapse. For this reason many high clerics are now talking about his resignation as more and more likely, even if not for now probably in the immediate few weeks or days.

Ivereigh: The Pope would resign if there is “prognosis of a long-term, debilitating or degenerative condition”

Editor’s Note: Despite the denials, we have at last a clear prognosis, not of Pope Francis’ road to recovery, but of under what conditions he would renounce the Papacy. And its source is highly reliable, since Austin Ivereigh is one of Pope Francis’ biographers and former secretary of one of the insiders in the Mafia of St. Gallen who put Bergoglio into power. Quoting the article above, verbatim, Ivereigh says:

“Hopefully he can pull through and as long as there is no prognosis of a long-term, debilitating or degenerative condition, I think he will push on,” the papal biographer concluded.

If Pope Francis were to renounce the papal office, the things he would have to do are explained at length in this article:

Cardinal Ravasi: The Pope could resign if his health worsens

Editor’s Note: Though no longer a member of the Roman Curia, the mere fact that such a high profile Vatican statesman is thinking that a visit by Giorgia Meloni, yesterday, the current Italian Premier visited Pope Francis, means a lot more than both of them are telling, is significant. — As an ex-Minister of Culture at the Vatican Cardinal Ravasi knows well, that it is NOT a duty of the PM to visit a sick pope in hospital, unless he is about to announce something which will greatly impact Italian National Security, such as a resignation. — Cardinal Ravasi was made a cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010 and participated in the faux conclave of 2013. He is 83 years of age and can no longer vote in Conclaves, so he is more free to speak than other Cardinals.

In the latest Vatican News release, here, no mention is still being made of either the Pope’s medical team’s components — a thing which would give a more complete picture of what kind of ailments are part of his complex medical condition — nor of any prognosis of how long of a stay in hospital is required to bring his health condition back to normal, if this is even possible.

Pope Francis to abdicate the Papacy? — Here is the evidence

by Br Alexis Bugnolo

It appears that Pope Francis may be about to renounce the papal office. I base my inference upon 3 things: namely that Pope Francis has repeatedly said, that if his health became much worse, he would consider renouncing; second, that his health has become seemingly worse in a permanent sort of a way, and three, at midnight this morning, a source inside RAI TV, Vatican Section, was put on full alert for an important news story which would break today. — Since Pope Francis does not seem to be in such a rapid decline of health as to die today, I conclude that he has decided to renounce. This also seems to be supported by the fact that all three of his secretaries, Spanish and Italian, have been visiting him daily.

So I give notice to the readers of FromRome.Info that as soon as some sort of further developments in this story break, that I will inform them immediately. And as soon as we might have a text of the renunication, I will comment on its validity, form, and legal value.

As a background, let it be noted that on Dec. 18, 2022, just 13 days before the death of Pope Benedict XVI, Pope Francis was reported to already have signed a conditional Resignation, if in the future he should fall into an incapacitated state.
