What the DoJ actually deploys are “assault” weapons, not to be confused with those they label such but are simply semi automatics. “Assault” rifles are military grade weapons that can be semi or full automatic, by means of a simple adjustment. Semiautomatic weapons discharge 1 projectile per trigger actuation; full aromatic weapons, such as “machine” guns, discharge multiple projectiles per trigger actuation. Civilians can only acquire full automatic weapons illegally,or by paying multiple sizeable fee, undergoing numerous investigations, and waiting several yrs to acquire them. Few make it through the process to acquire 1 legally. What civilians are purchasing are semi-automatic weapons, not “assault rifles”. On the other hand, police and military have and use full automatic or “assault” type weapons, in wars, in raids against drug dealers, and in recent yrs, against political “enemies”.
